The fictional Mann Co., a huge shipping and manufacturing business run by CEO Saxton Hale, serves as the game's focal point. The nine playable characters were employed as mercenaries for the "Gravel Wars," a war between the competing heirs Redmond "Red" and Blutarch "Blu" Mann, during which the main PvP gamemodes are set. In the Mann vs. Machine cooperative horde shooter mode, Gray Mann subsequently makes an appearance as the third competitor, murdering the other two competitors and forcing Hale to rehire the mercenaries to defend Mann Co. from Gray's robot army. Players in Team Fortress 2 can choose from nine character classes to play as in game modes like capture the flag and king of the hill after joining one of the two teams—RED or BLU.
